Benefitfocus.com Expands Presence in Upstate
Mount Pleasant, SC and Greenville, SC — June 7, 2005 — Benefitfocus.com, Inc., the fastest growing technology company in South Carolina, is expanding its presence in the Upstate with the grand opening of a new Greenville facility. The ceremony will take place Monday, June 13 with an address by S.C. Senator David Thomas.
“We are proud to announce the opening of our new Greenville office,” says Shawn Jenkins,
President and CEO of Benefitfocus.com. “I am particularly pleased that our state legislators have
shown such dedication to our company and the success of the technology climate of South
Carolina. Benefitfocus grew 236 percent in 2004 and expanded in both Greenville and our
Charleston headquarters—reflecting the state’s commitment to high technology jobs and business development.”
Since 1999, Benefitfocus.com has been a leading provider of employee benefits software and
services for large insurance carriers and their business clients. Currently its list of clients insures
over 12.5 million people representing 89,000 companies. Benefitfocus has members in all 50
states that use its software, as well as in eight countries as far away as Japan, Mexico, Chile and Poland.
When it first opened its office in Greenville in 2003, Benefitfocus had only four software engineers
in a 2,000-square foot facility. The new office has 5,000 more square feet to meet the needs of 18
client services and project management staff, all high-end engineers and technology-focused
associates. The company will create 10 to 15 new technology jobs in that office every year for the next several years, with a capacity for 65 associates in Greenville.
“We have added 29 employees since January, with 179 total employees statewide,” says
Jenkins. “We anticipate creating a total of 60 to 80 new high tech jobs in 2005.”
Sixty-seven percent of Benefitfocus associates have bachelors’ degrees in science and
engineering, which is a major growth target of the South Carolina Technology Alliance in its
measurement of the state’s technology business environment. With over 74 percent of its
associates employed as high tech engineers or analysts, Benefitfocus both attracts and retains a
world-class workforce. The average wage for Benefitfocus employees is double the state average and well above the national average.
Of its 179 total associates, 14 percent are Clemson graduates, predominately from the university’s computer engineering program and engineering graduate program.
“Creating more technology jobs decreases the drain of talent from our state and increases the percapita income for our citizens,” adds Jenkins.
The ceremony will take place Monday, June 13 at 11:30 a.m. at 430 Roper Mountain Road in Greenville.
