Benefitfocus has three core tenets: Provide Anticipatory Service, Respect the Individual and Celebrate! To achieve these principles, our company is structured like an inverted pyramid with clients at the very top. This is followed in descending order by customer service representatives and support associates, down to the various levels of management, and ending with the CEO and chairman of the board on the bottom providing support to the rest of the organization.
Shawn A. Jenkins | President and CEO (Founder)
Shawn Jenkins has realized a vision that is dramatically changing the landscape of healthcare benefits administration in all 50 states and 26 countries. He actively oversees sales activities and manages client relationships, averaging 10 to 12 client visits per month. Jenkins earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Charleston Southern University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Penn. He also holds a commercial pilot’s license. He serves the community on The Medical University of South Carolina Foundation Board of Directors, College of Charleston Board of Governors, Charleston Southern University Board of Visitors and has successfully served as Chairman of the Growing Forward Campaign for the Lowcountry Food Bank.
Mason R. Holland, Jr. | Chairman of the Board (Founder)
In his capacity as Chairman of the Board, Mason Holland is responsible for all board activities. Holland is also responsible for coordination of strategic partnerships with industry leaders and the development of large client relationships. He built his career around creating efficiencies in start-up and financial companies and understanding emerging markets in the early adopter stages. Entering each venture with the goal of driving down costs while still generating a profit, Holland founded American Pensions, Inc. (API) in 1988 serving as Chairman and President. Other ventures have included establishing Holland Properties, Inc. and acquiring Eclipse Aviation in September 2009. Holland attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
Andy Howell | Chief Operating Officer
Andy Howell is responsible for all operational aspects of the Carrier, Employer and Consumer business units, including the P&L of each business. During his tenure at Benefitfocus, he has also served as the SVP and General Manager of the Carrier Division, as well as SVP and General Counsel for the Company. Prior to joining Benefitfocus, he was VP and General Counsel for Blackbaud, Inc., where he played a key role in pre-IPO and IPO activities. He practiced corporate and technology law with Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, as well. Throughout his career he has led an array of technology initiatives, including complex software and service transactions, Internet matters and asset transfers. He has conducted mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings, private equity and venture capital transactions on both the company and investor side, primarily involving technology-based businesses. Howell received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington & Lee University and a Juris Doctor degree from Mercer University.
Annmarie Fini | Senior Vice President, Employer Business Unit
Annmarie Fini is responsible for all aspects of the employer business unit of Benefitfocus including the future direction and roadmap for product development. She also leads employer implementation, the HR Support Center, and other employer and employee support operations. Fini has 20 years of experience in the healthcare and software industry, with expertise in benefits, human resources and payroll. During her tenure at Benefitfocus, she has been responsible for building and maintaining key client relationships, managing multiple large client implementations and oversees all client facing activities. Fini earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in public policy from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.
Bert Young | Chief Financial Officer
Bert Young leads Benefitfocus' accounting and finance strategies and activities, and oversees the Human Resources team. A seasoned executive with more than 27 years of finance experience, Young has shown the ability to manage rapid growth. Prior to joining Benefitfocus, Young served as the CFO at several technology companies such as LANDesk Software, Talk2 Technology and Whittman-Hart, Inc. Throughout his career, Young has demonstrated a talent for directing complex financial transactions and the ability to leverage complex technology. Young received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Utah State University.
Don Taylor | Chief Technology Officer
Don Taylor is responsible for the technology direction of Benefitfocus. A software industry veteran of more than 25 years, Taylor brings expertise in the healthcare, banking and logistics industries. Prior to joining Benefitfocus, Taylor was the Founder and CTO for Boxcar Central, Inc. whose product was delivered as a Software as a Service multi-tenant suite of applications to the third-party logistics market. With the unique ability to translate a technology vision into enterprise value, Taylor has demonstrated his unwavering passion for delivering value to the customer.
Nancy Sansom | Vice President of Marketing and Communications
Nancy Sansom is responsible for marketing, corporate communication, creative services, strategic planning and corporate events for Benefitfocus. While at Benefitfocus, she has held multiple roles including that of Vice President of Product Management and Marketing, overseeing the design and development of the Benefitfocus Platform and applications. Sansom has more than 15 years of experience with an extensive background in software product management, marketing, implementation and consulting, as well as manufacturing and supply chain management. Prior to joining Benefitfocus, she was a Senior Associate at Cambar Solutions, Inc., a software company also based in Charleston. Sansom earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Carnegie Mellon University.
Douglas Drake | Vice President of Information Technology
As Vice President of Information Technology for Benefitfocus, Drake provides leadership in technology infrastructure and security. Drake was a pioneer of the Computer Hosting business, serving as one of the architects of the original managed hosting facilities and services, which led him to build and manage facilities all over the world. Before joining Benefitfocus, Drake was the head of Central Operation and Engineering for Northrop Grumman, where he managed a team that was responsible for the day-to-day operation and engineering of its system devices. Drake is a graduate of the University of Rochester and has obtained the Master Certificate for IT management.
Ted Tanner | Vice President of Engineering, Core Systems
Ted Tanner is Vice President of Engineering, Core Systems. He directs R&D, Developer Services, Developer Communities and all development for Semantics, Machine Learning and Distributed Computing. Formerly he was the CTO of BeliefNetworks, Inc., where he led all technical architecture and intellectual property strategy with respect to knowledge fusion, distributed computing, machine learning and data mining. Benefitfocus purchased BeliefNetworks, Inc. in 2010. Previously he worked with Microsoft Corporation on an array of products and technologies; as the VP of R&D for MongoMusic – purchased by Microsoft in 2000; and Apple Computer, Inc. as the Media Architect for OS9 and OSX underlying products. He holds a Master of Science degree in Music Engineering from the University of Miami.
Fred Robinson | Chief Architect
As Chief Architect, Fred Robinson focuses on the scalability and architecture of the Benefitfocus Platform that includes a developer toolkit for the Benefitfocus engineering community. Robinson carries over 30 years of experience leading software development teams and creating technology solutions. Prior to joining Benefitfocus, he was with Cambar Solutions, Inc. where he developed industry-leading infrastructure and operational tools. Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the University of South Carolina.
Jessica Brewer | Vice President of Engineering
As the Vice President of Engineering for Benefitfocus, Brewer is responsible for planning and directing all engineering projects to achieve company goals and objectives. Brewer’s background includes the roles of Project Manager, Software Developer and Quality Assurance Manager. Brewer received her Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Charleston, and went on to receive a master's degree in software development management from the University of Maryland.
Jim Kelly | Vice President of Employer Sales
Jim Kelly oversees sales for the Employer Division as the Vice President of Employer Sales. With more than 15 years of experience in sales and business development, Kelly’s expertise ranges from generating revenue and exceeding sales goals to expanding market share for large software and technology companies. Prior to joining Benefitfocus, Kelly was a Senior Vice President at CA. He received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Ken Poletti | Vice President of Integration and Data Services
Ken Poletti is responsible for successful integration between the Benefitfocus Platform and insurance carrier systems. As Vice President of Integration and Data Services, Poletti and his team design system integration and implementation requirements, as well as conduct business process re-engineering, project management, new product integration and technical sales support. During his tenure, Poletti has served many roles, including Vice President of Professional Services. Prior to Benefitfocus, Poletti owned his own consulting company and spent nine years in healthcare IT with Hill-Rom, Inc. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Hofstra University.
Clarke Wallace | Vice President of Carrier Client Services
Clarke Wallace is Vice President of Carrier Client Services and serves as the strategic partner liaison between Benefitfocus and its carrier clients. Wallace oversees account management, operations management, employer support services and market adoption of Benefitfocus solutions. Prior to Benefitfocus, he was the Vice President of Strategic Alliances for In-Q-Tel. Wallace received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia and holds a Master of Business Administration degree with a focus on international business.
Nina Sossamon-Pogue | Vice President of Benefitfocus Media
Nina Sossamon-Pogue, an Emmy Award-winning television news anchor, is Vice President of Benefitfocus Media. With a background in investigative reporting, she was a popular on-air talent for ABC and NBC affiliates before joining Benefitfocus. Prior to that, she served as press secretary to Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards. Sossamon-Pogue graduated from Louisiana State University and is a former member of the United States Gymnastics Team.
Radha Kuchibhotla | Vice President of Quality
Radha Kuchibhotla focuses on enterprise quality spanning all Benefitfocus software development processes, products and technology infrastructure. Kuchibhotla has more than 23 years of demonstrated leadership in building and leading high-performing global teams. In addition to his core competence in quality assurance and control, he has been responsible for engineering, enterprise capacity and performance for large financial services firms. Prior to joining Benefitfocus, Kuchibhotla was Vice President at Fidelity Investments for 15 years. He has a master’s degree from the University of Mumbai and a Master of Business Administration degree from Northeastern University.
Robert Moss | Vice President of Product Management
Robert Moss is responsible for defining the strategic direction and evolution of the Benefitfocus Platform and applications, including evaluating, enhancing and bringing to market new Platform features and applications. His Product Management team provides a wide range of services that includes market analysis, requirements writing, product design, user research, program management and sales support. Prior to joining Benefitfocus, Moss was a Software Architect and Technology Manager in the Product and Consulting Services divisions of Blackbaud, LLC. Moss holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Furman University and a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina, and in addition to his work in the software industry has published several scholarly books and numerous articles in both academic journals and commercial publications.
Greg McLain | Vice President of Finance
Greg McLain is the Vice President of Finance for Benefitfocus. McLain manages and oversees all finance and accounting activities such as financial reporting, tax compliance, internal controls design and monitoring, as well as financial forecasting and analysis. McLain began his career at Benefitfocus as the Director of Finance and was previously a partner for Ernst & Young, a national accounting and tax firm. His certifications include Certified Public Accountant and Certified Information Technology Professional. McLain received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from the University of South Carolina.
Paris Cavic | General Counsel
As General Counsel, Paris Cavic is responsible for software licensing, professional services, contract negotiation and all legal matters concerning the Company. He has more than 12 years experience as a technology, healthcare, commercial contract, corporate and compliance attorney. Prior to joining Benefitfocus, Cavic was Corporate Counsel with The Trizetto Group. He has been awarded a Master of Laws degree in intellectual property law, a Juris Doctor from Albany Law School, and a Master of Business Administration degree in management and technology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
