Tipping the funding scales in public health

Thanks to years of important public service announcements, school programs and grassroots organizations, almost everyone knows that both smoking and being overweight are bad for your health. What you may not know is that the campaigns against both vices are locked in a battle for your attention.

Over the past two years, the budgets for anti-tobacco programs have been cut by about $150 million, as many private and governmental organizations shift their educational focus and funding dollars to the fight against obesity. While many are worried about the decline in anti-smoking spending, others point out that the funds are simply going where they are needed. Today one in five Americans smokes cigarettes, while one in three is obese.
