Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket for health care services that are covered under your plan before insurance will start paying for those services. For example, if your deductible is $1,000, you'll pay out of pocket for covered services until you reach that amount. After the deductible is met, you typically only pay a copayment or coinsurance for those services depending on how your plan is structured. 

Out-of-Pocket Maximum

The out-of-pocket maximum, or limit, is the most you have to pay for services covered by your health plan in a given year. If/when you spend that amount on deductibles, copayments and coninsurance, your health plan pays 100% of the costs of covered services.

High-Deductible Health Plan 

Also known as a Consumer-Directed Health Plan (CDHP), a High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) is a health insurance option with a lower premium and higher deductibles than traditional health plans. That means you typically pay less per paycheck, but you pay more before the insurance company starts to pay its share (deductible).

Health Savings Account

A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a tax-advantaged savings account that is used in combination with an HDHP. You can use HSA funds to cover medical expenses that are deemed "qualified" by the IRS. HSAs can be a powerful tool to manage current and future health expenses. Unlike an FSA, HSA funds roll over year after year.
