How Do 2018 Employer Health Plan Offerings & Participation Differ by Region?

Is it 'pop' or 'soda'? 'Lightning bugs' or 'fireflies'? 'Sneakers or 'tennis shoes'?

The answer depends on where you live, right?  

While it's probably the most fun to talk about, vocabulary is just one of many areas where our regional differences show up in the U.S. From the way we talk, to the food we eat, to the clothes we wear, our geographical location has an enormous amount of influence.

So what about employee benefits? What influence does geography have there?

For Benefitfocus' 2018 State of Employee Benefits Regional Edition, we broke out our large-group enrollment data into the four regional divisions used by the U.S. Census Bureau: Midwest, Northeast, South and West.

The report highlights key multi-year trends in each of these regions and presents overall comparisons of various metrics for the 2018 benefit plan year.

Two such metrics are 1) employer health plan offerings and 2) health plan participation among employees. And, as you can see below, there are distinct differences among the regions:
