Inaugural Dust Bowl

Last Thursday, the Benefitfocus User Experience (UX) Design Team organized and co-hosted the inaugural Dust Bowl. Participants, which included representatives from Benefitfocus, LinkedIn, PayPal, Yahoo and StubHub, met at PayPal’s headquarters in San Jose, CA to discuss the open source “Dust.js” framework, which is being developed to improve the manner by which people interact with digital technology. The event was a learning and collaborating opportunity for attendees, allowing them to innovate further.

What is UX?

At Benefitfocus, our UX Design Team is made up of interaction designers and engineers, information architects and content strategists who work together to translate complex business requirements into software applications for clients. Working closely with business analysts, product managers and engineers, the UX team is responsible for designing and developing intuitive and engaging user experiences for our Portfolio of Products & Services.

What is Dust.js?

The Dust.js framework is an open source codebase that allows for the design of a flexible, dynamic and contemporary user interface. The Benefitfocus UX Team began designing with the Dust.js framework two years ago to create an intuitive and efficient user interface across all applications within the BENEFITFOCUS® Platform. It allows for rapid change to the user interface while decoupling it from the backend codebases.

Supporting the UX Community in Charleston

Benefitfocus also sponsors Charleston UX, a monthly gathering where UX professionals come together to discuss relevant user experience topics at the Benefitfocus Design + Engineering Building located on the company’s campus in Charleston, S.C. As a sponsor, Benefitfocus provides the local community of professionals the opportunity to network with industry leaders and colleagues. Topics discussed included interaction design, information architecture, content strategy, visual design and user research & testing.

More than 70 members attended the launch party for Charleston UX in October, and the group has grown to 120 active members since. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 6:30 p.m.
