John is Chief Data Officer (CDO) at Benefitfocus. He joined us in November 2020 and brought with him an impressive portfolio as a data executive across a variety of domains: social media, online advertising, mobile analytics and customer journey optimization. While he, not-so-secretly, wishes he could run his own miniature golf course, he really has the data wizard role down pat. His focus is on leveraging data to optimize existing processes, create new capabilities and drive bottom line growth.
Roles & Responsibilities
John leads our company’s data strategy, ensuring that we use our data to make our products smarter and more predictive and to help employees, brokers and carriers in our ecosystem make more informed, data-based decisions. He works closely with our technology organization to define and deliver new data-driven applications. He and his team of data scientists and business intelligence analysts are evolving the way we use data to delight our customers and strengthen our benefits technology platform.
After receiving his Bachelor of Science in mathematics and computer science from Gettysburg College, John completed his Master of Science in computer science from Dartmouth College. He loved it there so much, he stayed on to complete his PhD in computer science. Before joining Benefitfocus, John was executive vice president of data science at Red Ventures and launched their data science team. He oversaw a dramatic machine-learning transformation of their digital marketing funnel. Currently, he serves as president of the Analytics & Big Data Society and is an advisory board member for Wake Forest University’s Master’s of Business Analytics program. In 2019 he was profiled as one of Charlotte Business Journal’s 40 Under 40.
Hobbies & Interests
John enjoys being active with ice hockey, running, biking and chasing around his four kids aged 1 to 9.
